About Us
Since 2001, the John Franklin Christmas Lunch, hosted jointly by St Patrick’s Catholic Church and St John’s Anglican Church in Sutherland, provides a free Christmas meal for those who would otherwise spend the day alone.
The event features a beautifully decorated setting and a sit-down Christmas lunch, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
There will be live Christmas music to entertain guests and enhance the festive spirit, while a dedicated team of volunteers supports the organising committee throughout the season.
Generous donations from individuals, schools, churches, community groups, and businesses in the Sutherland Shire and nearby areas make this event possible.
Please note, this event is held in a smoke-free environment, and alcohol and pets are not permitted on site.

Our History
The John Franklin Christmas Lunch was born from a heartfelt bond that grew between a young man named John Franklin and Fr John Sullivan, the former parish priest of St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sutherland.
Inspired by John's life story, Fr John proposed a Christmas Day lunch open to anyone wanting company on Christmas. The idea resonated strongly with parishioners, and soon, St Patrick’s community joined forces with St John’s Anglican Church. Together, they formed a committee and established the "John Franklin Christmas Lunch" in his memory. The event aims to bring together those facing challenges or simply without company on Christmas Day.
